Word of MouthWord-of-mouth training event

By David Binkowski

The Word of Mouth Basic Training (WOMBAT) is scheduled for Jan. 19 and 20, 2006, in Orlando. As a friend of Hass, just use the code hassisawesome to receive $75 off.

I'm speaking at the conference in a session titled How To Create Great Blogs That Get People Talking, with Jason Woodmansee, the manager of Global eMarketing for TaylorMade-adidas Golf. (Note to self: Hmm, maybe a golf blog where I review free products?)

A ton of speakers are scheduled, and the event blog is up and running. I've been to previous WOMMA events and the agenda is always packed. You'll find a lot of good stuff here.

I just recorded a podcast for the WOMBAT blog, too.

Florida in January. And golf clubs. Where could you find a better deal?

Good Blog, Bad BlogEverybody loves Dilbert

Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, has a blog that's a couple of months old and it's a big hit. The blog has hundreds of comments, and Adams talks about everything from his comic strips to bottled water to deviated septums.

Recently, he hit the nail on the head about blogs.

If you are new to the Internet, allow me to explain how to debate in this medium. When one person makes any kind of statement, all you need to do is apply one of these methods to make it sound stupid. Then go on the offensive.

He names seven generalities that are hilarious, and the premise is absolutely true: No matter what you say on a blog and no matter how harmless you think it is, someone will be offended.

And that post was a respone to his original post - which had 607 comments - where he asked readers to tell him why he is stupid.

Corporate bloggers (and PR bloggers for that matter) should take a drink of the Dilbert Kool-Aid and remember that blogging can be fun, even when commenters aren't always positive.

Shameless Self-PromotionWe're right there with Media Guerrilla

PubSub indexed and ranked public relations blogs with help from Constantin Basturea. Constantin has some tips on how the list and rankings work.

Mike Manuel of Media Guerrilla says "Also, I’m excited to point out that Media Guerrilla is making *aggressive* movements up the chart today, I’m currently in a 75-way tie for 67th place…you can’t cage this monkey, don’t even try."

BlogWorks is right up there at 73rd place.

Blogging 101Movable Type 3.2, banish ye, foul trackbacks

I'm in love. The drugs, the porn, the casinos –- those days are over.

We upgraded the General Motors' blogs about a month ago, and the difference is amazing. With the Movable Type 3.2 upgrade, the trackback spam goes right into a tidy, aptly named "junk" folder. No more cringing in fear each morning to see if *&^% and @#&& made it into trackbacks.

One glitch is that the filtering seems to be hit or miss. Some junk comments still make it through the filter, but that hasn't caused a problem because we moderate the comments. At first we tried a plus two level for spam moderation, which banished all of our comments to junk land. The zero setting seems about right.

Here at BlogWorks, however, we're still at 3.17. Customers first; the BlogWorks upgrade comes next.

Blogging 101Jobseekers clueless about blogs?

The current poll on monster.com is "Do you ever blog about work?"

Of the roughly 12,000 votes, 58 percent have answered, "What is a blog?" Twenty-nine percent say "never"; 6 percent say "sometimes"; and a mere 5 percent say "yes, I think of it as therapy."

Also looks like the Monster blog has been running for awhile now. It's a group blog by the writers of Monster's career center, and postings are daily, mostly with career advice.
